Millet fritters (Bajra- Jowar Vada)

Bajra, Jowar both belongs to the millet family and gluten free grains. When compared to rice and wheat they high in calcium and packed with iron, protein and fiber. There are numerous health benefits of millets so good to add in our regular diet.

I like to make this vada most frequently. It is perfect for any time snacking and in travelling.


  • Millet flour ( Bajra Flour) ½ cup
  • Sorghum ( Jowar flour)flour ½ cup
  • Whole wheat flour ¼ cup
  • Red chili powder ½ teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder ½ teaspoon
  • Cumin-coriander powder ½ teaspoon
  • Brown sugar 1-3 spoons
  • Sesame seeds 1 tbsp
  • Ajwain ½ teaspoon
  • Green Chilies 1-3( chopped)
  • Ginger 1 inch( chopped)
  • Garlic cloves 3-5 ( chopped or paste)
  • Oil 3 tbsp
  • Pinch of Hing ( Asafetida)
  • Fenugreek leaves(methi leaves) 1 cup washed and chopped
  • Yogurt ¼ cup
  • Water 2-5 tbsp , more or less as needed
  • Oil for fry


  1. Mix in a bowl all the ingredients except water to form dough.
  2. Add very little water at a time (if needed) and knead into stiff dough.
  3. Now take small marble sized portion, make smooth ball and flatten it out with your fingers. Make sure that are not many crakes around the edges. Vada should be about 1.8 inch thick.
  4. Make all the vadas and when you are about to finish heat the oil. Fry few at a time. Fry till they are crisp and golden brown from both the sides.
  5. Remove it to a paper towel.
  6. Let it cool and serve warm or at room temperature.
