Avocado, Chickpea Sandwich in Gram Flour Batter

imageIf you are looking for a quick and healthy, flavor full sandwich, make this smashed Chickpea and avocado sandwich. It is one of my favorite sandwiches and hopes you like it too!!

Avocados are packed with disease-fighting antioxidants, nutrients and heart healthy compounds. Chickpeas provides you vegetarian friendly source of protein and fibers.

Ingredients for Fillings

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 1 cup chickpea cooked
  • 1 tbsp. ground walnut
  • 1 clove garlic crushed
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds
  • ¼ cayenne red chili powder ( adjust according to your taste)
  • ½ tbsp. Black Pepper ground ( adjust according to your taste)
  • Salt to taste
  • ¼ cup finely chopped cilantro
  • ½ tsp ground cumin
  • Juice of 1 small lime, less or more to preference

Ingredients for Gram Flour Batter

  • 1 cup gram flour/Besan
  • 1/8 tsp. grated fresh turmeric or dry turmeric powder
  • Pinch of freshly ground black pepper
  • Pinch of asafoetida
  • Water to make a batter of medium consistency
  • Salt to taste


  1. In a wide mouth bowl or in a deep plate add gram flour/Besan, turmeric powder, black pepper and salt to taste.
  2. Add water, whisk to a medium consistence batter. There should be no lumps in the batter. Keep aside.
  3. In another bowl, mash the chickpea and avocado until avocado is well mashed and most of the chickpeas are not whole.
  4. Add walnut, sesame seeds, red chili powder, black Pepper, finely chopped cilantro, ground cumin, crushed garlic, lime juice and salt to taste. Mix in.
  5. Taste and adjust salt and spice.
  6. Heat 1 tbsp. sesame oil or olive oil in a frying pan.
  7. Layer a good of the smashed chickpea avocado mixture on one slice of bread. Cover with another slice of the bread.
  8. Dip the bread in the batter with your hands; coat the bread evenly with the batter. Don’t keep the bread too long in the batter.
  9. Place the batter coated bread slices on the frying pan. When base is cooked and browned, flip and fry the other side. You can add more oil if required.
  10. Fry the remaining bread sandwich in the same way.
  11. Serve these sandwiches with any juice or smoothie or with any dip.
